Abstract
The shaded pole motor has been used widely as a fan motor, etc. because of its high reliability and low manufacturing cost. The motor, however, has a low efficiency because of the great copper loss of the shading coil. To improve efficiency, we discuss the effect of shading coil shapes on the performance characteristics. It is clarified that the generating torque increases as the width of the shading coil becomes greater. The calculated values approximately agree with the experimental ones.
