Abstract
Reproduced envelope of VCR head output will vary depending on the combination of magnetic head contour shape and tape stiffness, with low stiffness tapes in particular having damped envelope. Head contour was measured by the interference ring method with spline interpolation. The change of the head contour through wear has various patterns according to the head construction. Head shape dependence and tape tension dependence of reproduced envelopes were studied in connection with the tape stiffness. Reproduced envelope decreases with the increase of the radius of curvature for transverse direction of the head surface. Envelope improvement will be obtained by choosing the best position of gap on the head contour for each head construction, and by decrease of tape tension and head protrusion.
