Issues in Safety Standards for Planar Transformer Design

Abstract

In this paper, we present a simple method for determining the equivalent circuits of planar tranformers from the results of numerical analysis. On the basis of this method, we discuss issues involved in designing planar transformers that conform to the safety standard IEC950. We show that a large space for insulation considerably reduces the coupling factor of conductor-embedded-type planar transformers. We also present a method for alleviating the problem.
