A method for analyzing the light scattered from magnetic materials was developed for Land/Groove recording by using The products of the scattering light intensity and Kerr rotation (R·θ) were calculated function of the land or groove width. The calculation results show that the R·θ of a land is larger than that of a groove for TM-polarized light, and vice versa for TE-polarized light. The measured track pitch dependence of the carrier level agreed with the calculation results. In Land/Groove recording, in terms of carrier level and crosstalk, TM-polarization is than TE-polarization when a land is reproduced, and TE-polarization is better when a groove is reproduced.
