Patient and Public Involvement( PPI) in research is defined as“ research being carried out‘ with’ or ‘by’ members of the public rather than‘ to’,‘ about’ or ‘for’ them” by INVOLVE, a leading PPI advisory organization in the UK. In the process, the views, values and / or opinions of patients and the public are examined to make sure each research study is socially, scientifically, and ethically valid. This paper provides an overview and explores the potential impact of PPI in observational studies using human materials and / or data in Japan. First, we summarize a short description of PPI, then provide the results of a survey of scientists’ and patient organizations’ experiences and views regarding PPI-related activities in Japan. Our results show that the tangible support system of each PPI activity as well as a discussion on the future of PPI activities are needed to make PPI activities in Japan appropriate.
