This paper gives an examination on the current situation and some economic issues influencing the development of Japanese organic agriculture, by using some statistics of domestic and oversea sources.
Since the enactment of Organic Agriculture Promotion Law in Japan (2006), the environment of developing organic agriculture has been obviously improved in policy making and the institutional improvement for research and extension, etc. The movement and farming practices of organic agriculture has moved agricultural administrative and effectively promoted the understanding in environment, agriculture and food issues. However, the current development of organic agriculture is in an easy motion. The low per capital consumption of organic products, compared with some European countries, may be a determinant for explaining the current situation.
Therefore, the understanding for actual consumption, consumer and producer behavior may contribute to policy making and further research.
