Abstract
Use of a patent visualization tool based on text mining techniques allows for the ease of overviewing a large number of patents. It proves to be greatly helpful in making the most of patent information at a stage prior to implementing a specific R&D activity, as in exploring research themes. This paper examines the effective use of patent analysis support tools, including visualization tool and macro-analytic approach, to explore research themes and identify would-be competitors in research planning phase.
