Abstract
Intellectual analysis-based indexing is the core element in producing CA, the world’s largest database in chemistry. CAS REGISTRY numbers, controlled subject heading terms, and CAS roles enable efficient, comprehensive, and pin-point search and retrieval. Trained chemists conduct deep analysis of documents and use their expertise to prepare value-added indexing entries, which is impossible by machine indexing. CA index entries are gathered, analyzed, and processed into higher-level information, crucial for decision making in R&D, merger & acquisition, etc.
