To study the acute and semi-acute deleterious effects of stomatitis drug (TSO ointment) con -taining shikon extracts on oral mucosa, experiments were made by applying drugs to the labial gingival tissue in the mandible associated with incissors of Wistar male rats and the buccal pouch of male golden hamster. An acute deleterious effect was determined by the continuo us application of TSO ointment for 1, 3, and 6 hours. The semiacute deleterious effect was determined by the application of TSO ointment twice a day for 4 weeks.
With the acute deleterious effect, no significant difference was found to the naked eye and by histopathological examinations between the experimental and control groups in rats and hamsters. The same results were obtained for the semi-acute deleterious effects. Thus, no significant difference was found on growth, general behavior, naked-eye and histopathological observations of the experimental and control groups in rats and hamsters.
On the basis of this data, it seems reasonable to assume that the deleterious effect of stomatitis drug (TSO ointment) on oral mucosa might be fairly low.
