Abstract

【Purpose】We reported a patient with ametropic amblyopia and severe astigmatism in both eyes, who had been corrected with toric hard contact lenses (toric HCLs) after the peak of the patient's susceptibility period and still obtained good visual acuity.

【Case】The patient (girl, 11 years and 11 months) was detected with low vision at a school physical examination when she was 6 years old and visited a neighborhood clinic. Glasses were prescribed for her severe astigmatism, but the patient was not able to wear them. When she was referred to our hospital, her initial corrected visual acuity was 0.1 for both eyes. The cycloplegic refractive test revealed -3.75D Cyl-5.50D Ax175° in the right eye and -2.75D Cyl-6.50D Ax15° in the left eye, indicating severe astigmatism. She was diagnosed with ametropic amblyopia and toric HCLs were prescribed. Seven months later, good visual acuity of 1.0 was obtained in both eyes.

【Conclusion】We have experienced a case of refractive amblyopia with severe astigmatism in both eyes which was successfully corrected with toric HCLs after the patient's peak of the susceptibility period.
