On the Color Reaction of α-Cholestanol with Certain Sulfonium Salt Solutions prepared from Dimethyl Sulfoxide and Acyl Halides or Related Compounds

Abstract

The feasibility studies on a color reaction of α-cholestanol with certain sulfonium salt solutions prepared from DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) and acyl halides or related compounds are described. The reactions observed in the series of investigations were measured spectrophotometrically. For the method detecting a-cholestanol, sulfonium solution prepared by reacting POCl₃ with DMSO gave satisfactory results whereas AcBr (acetyl bromide) or AcI (acetyl iodide) gave colored substances with DMSO. SOCl₂ was also of no use for analytical purposes because of producing corrosive SO₂.
