Abstract

Marunouchi area is the first class business town and its townscape is in good order. But it was pretty different before World War II. This study tries to explain the composition of Marunouchi area at that time. In the process of the town’s development since Meiji era, the types of architecture experienced some changes. Then, as a result Marunouchi area was composed of 4 types of townscape, which were harmonized as a whole without losing identity of each type. Some special architecture standing at street corners played a great role in this characteristic composition of townscape.
