Abstract
In Mega Recycle Stores, layouts of store shelves are often complicated because shop owners want to increase profit by their limited space. Complicated store layouts can generate spatial concealment and result in cases of shoplifting. The objective of this study is to identify the relationship between shoplifting and shop layouts at Mega Recycle Stores. By interviewing loss prevention officers, variables related to product characteristics and their visibility from cash registers were found. These variables were measured in the 11 stores and combined with merchandise loss calculated by Point of Sale (POS) data. A generalized linear mixed model analysis that considers both the differences between shops and the differences in each shop was conducted. As a result, the importance of surveillance from cash registers and the product characteristic which prompts shoplifting were identified.
