Abstract

The purpose of this study is to clarify the effectiveness to utilize the characteristics of “place” in historical landscape. The Seki-juku Preservation District is divided into respective sub-zones based on the survey conducted in 1980 to review characteristics of the area to establish the preservation district. The municipality manage them referring to the preservation plan that illustrates characteristics of respective sub-zones. We compare the states before the designation as the preservation district and at the present using pictures taken in the 1980 survey and documents stored in the municipality. Second, we analyze the perception of experts about the characteristics of “place”. Finally, we discuss the effectiveness on characteristics of “place” that might be caused by the perception.
