Abstract

This study aimed to clarify the effect of parents and children living in proximity on the intention to inherit parental family residence located in suburban residential districts in metropolitan areas. A questionnaire survey of children living in proximity revealed the following results. Although most of the respondents lived in proximity to increase opportunities for interaction with parents, this did not have a strong influence on the enhancement of the intention to inherit the parental family residence. Furthermore, economic factors and the convenience of medical facilities influenced the development of the intention to succeed parental family residence. However, "already owning a house," which was regarded as a negative factor in previous studies, had less influence than the convenience of medical and educational facilities and the barrier-free performance of the house.
