Prices related to mobility have been rising in recent years, and there are concerns about deterioration in affordability. However, it is unclear to what extent people’s expenditures associated with their mobility are a burden on them. Here, we examined the expenditures associated with people’s mobility in terms of household income and place of residence for households nationwide, by calculating the mobility-associated expenditures and the ratio of those expenditures to annual household income. Although households with lower incomes spent less on automobiles, their ratio of expenditure to annual household income tended to be higher compared with that of households with higher incomes. Thus, although households need to ensure the affordability of mobility, our findings show that spending on automobiles can be a burden for some households.
