Anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) process is a new type of nitrogen removal process that has received worldwide attention because of its high efficiency and low carbon emission. Based on the requirements for advanced wastewater treatment process and energy conservation, the hydroxyapatite (HAP)-enhanced granule type one-stage partial nitritation/anammox system was applied in this experiment. The purpose of this experiment was to study the effect of 25 °C and 35 °C on the system. The reactor was operated for a long time at temperatures of 25 °C and 35 °C, under an HRT of 12 hours fed with ammonium concentration of 500 mg/L. This experiment proved that the temperature increase would have an enhancement on microbial activity and no effect on HAP production, the rapid temperature fluctuation of the reactor between 25 °C and 35 °C was not affected the stable operation of the reactor. However, long-term operation at 35 °C will lead to the disintegration of HAP-enhanced anammox sludge due to a significant decrease in protein tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (T-EPS) secretion, resulting in a large loss of biomass, which will hinder the reactor from stable operation at 35 °C for a long period of time.
