Abstract
The lifestyle of 244 large bred dogs raised in Wakayama, Nara and Osaka were surveyed. Owners were asked to fill out a questionnaire sheet upon visiting veterinary clinic for pet vaccination. Body condition score (BCS) of each dog was evaluated by the veterinarian. As a result,28% and 17% of the large bred dogs were judged as overweight and obese, respectively. The Golden and Labrador Retrievers and many female dogs were more likely to become obese. Spayed and neutered dog also tended to be obese and the tendency was stronger for male dogs. A definite correlation between BCS and frequency of feeding or type of feed was not found. In the group given snacks, however, dogs were found to have a higher rate of BCS5. There were also distinctly high BCS values for group of dogs taken out for only very short walks.
