Abstract
We propose that martensitic transformations are a possible candidate for the mechanism of deep earthquakes. It is shown that such transformations are consistent with the principal features of deep earthquakes, and the fact that diffusion is quenched by large pressures makes this transformation feasible. Calculations of nucleation kinetics are carried out to show that metastable phases may be expected to exist over long times within subducting plates.
