Abstract
In the preceding papers (1, 2), maltoxin, a basic substance isolated from malt rootlet, was reported to cause peripheral paralysis in the frog, and this effect was attributed to the blockade of neuromuscular transmission which differs from that due to d-tubocurarine, because of a stimulant effect on the rectus muscle of the frog.
In the present experiments the mode of neuromuscular block produced by maltoxin was further studied in the muscle. It was suggested that maltoxin has a dual mode of blocking action resembling that seen in decamethonium. That is, it depolarizes the frog muscle and at the same time decreases the sensitivity of the muscle to acetylcholine.
The neuromuscular block by decamethonium was also examined for comparison.
