Abstract

The effects of precursors, methods of impregnation, and activation by hydrogen on Co-Re-Sr/SiO2 catalysts for the synthesis of C2-oxygenates from syngas were studied. Acetates were the best precursors for Co and Sr. The catalysts prepared from chlorides showed the lowest activity for ethanol synthesis. Nitrates as Co precursors exhibited the highest activity for CO hydrogenation, but they showed low selectivity for C2-oxygenates with the formation of higher hydrocarbons (Table 1, Fig. 1). Higher activities were obtained by impregnating the catalysts with Re on Sr-Co/SiO2 or Re and Sr on Co/SiO2 (Table 2); also, the catalysts activated by hydrogen at 450°C with a programmed rate under 50deg.h-1 had the highest activity for C2-oxygenates (Fig. 2).
