Abstract
The activity of p-benzoquinones as an antioxidant was investigated in an autoxidation of 9, 10-dihydroanthracene or styrene initiated with AIBN. The quinones having electron-attracting groups were effective in retarding the autoxidation, especially under UV irradiation. The action of the antioxidant is explained in terms of the formation of phenols from a quinone excited by UV light, which abstracts hydrogen atoms of a substrate such as HALS existing in the reaction environment.
