Father of the Patent Family, Pioneer of Patent Information

Abstract

This report describes the products that Monty Hyams produced in the early days of the former Derwent, the predecessor of Clarivate Analytics' Intellectual Property Information business unit, and its background. How did Hyams get Derwent to make patent abstracts and indexes? Records of negotiations with WIPO and patent issuing agencies, such as negotiations for leadership until the first publication of the World Patents Index, are still available in the Monty Hyams Archives. The Japanese user council became a member of the product service early on, and there was an active movement to improve data recording for Hyams and the former Derwent.
