Abstract

1. Anatomical characeristics of the leaves of following six Carices are described in these papers: Carex limosa, C.livida, C.papulosa, C.rariflora, C. laxa and C. vaginata var. Petersii.
2. These species have very few common characteristics, in spite of the many resemblances shown in the outer features.
An analytical key to these species are as follows:-
1{Protuberances occurring in the under epidermis……2
Protuberances never ever occurring in the under epidermis (except on the midrib)……5
2{Spherical protuberances occurring in the upper epidermis……C.limosa.
Spherical protuberances never occurring in the upper epidermis……3
3{Epidermal cells surrounding the stomata and the protuberances on them covering the stomata……C.livida.
Epidermal cells surrounding the stomata never covering the stomata……4
4{Hinge cells in one layer, inconspicuous. Protuberances found densely in the under epidermis……C.papulosa.
Hinge cells in two or more layers. Protuberances existing extremely sparcely in the under epidermis……C.rariflora.
5{Hinge cells in two or more layers. Subsidiary cells of the stomata protrude on the guard cells ……C.rariflora.
Hinge cells in one layer. Subsidiary cells never protrude ……6
6{Protuberances found numerously in the upper epidermis on the nerve……C.laxa.
Protuberances hardly found in the epidermis……C.vaginata var. Petersii.
