Effect of auxin on the cells of a respiration-deficient mutant strain of Saccharomyces ellipsoideus was studied. Cell number at the stationary phase was lowered by auxin at concentrations which made cells elongated. Cells did not elongate under conditions favorable for the cell division. When nutrients or oxygen supply was lacking, auxin did not elongate cells. Each cell elongated by auxin contained one nucleus and higher amount of RNA than control.
