Abstract

Half-side section of the spinal cord in lumbar or sacral segment, and one-side section of anterior or posterior horn of sacral segment were performed respectively on the adult dog, and the degenera-tion of nerve fibers in the spinal cord were examined on the continuous specimen with Marchi's staining. The results obtined were as follows:
1. It was ascertained through autopsy that each section showed well coincidence as that expected. The injured range of the spinal cord around the part of section were about 3800-8600μ in the case with left half-side section of lumbar segment, 2000-3600μ with left half-side section of sacral segment, and 1200-3200μ with one-side section of anterior or posterior horn of sacral segment, respectively.
2. Ascending or descending degeneration of nerve fibers around the injured part of the spinal cor, which had same concept as to the ascending or descending tract, were pursuited.
There could not be found any specific aspect on the descending degeneration in the case of half-side section of lumbar segment.
Concerning to the ascending degeneration, there could be found many degenerated fibers in the fasciculus aneatus of the lower part of 7th lumbar segment, and furthermore, somewhat localized degenerated fibers in the center part of the dorsal tract of upper part of 7th lumbar segment were found, However, there could not be found the degenerated fibers like this in the range of further upper part of 6th lumbar segment. On the other hand, similar aspects of degeneration were observed after the one-side section of posterior horn of sacral segment.
