Abstract

Spectra of optical absorption (3 eV -- 6 eV) and emission(2.9 eV -- 4.1 eV) have been investigated onCe3+ centres inYAlO3:Ce3+ single crystals at 297 K; excitation spectrum for360 nm light in the Ce3+ emission band region has also beenmeasured in the region of 3.5 eV -- 6.2 eV. Measurement ofexcitation spectrum for Ce3+ centres in YAlO3:Ce3+ powderphosphor has been made at room temperature in the region of 3 eV--11 eV. The excitaticn spectra in the air UV region consist of fivebands assignable to the five levels of the Ce3+ 5d; they areexpressible by Gaussian functions, respectively, and therefrom thecrystalline field splitting 10Dq=1.128 eV is derived. Theexcitation spectrum in the VUV region has a great peak at 8.05 eVwhich originates from the valence-band excitons. It is confirmed thatthe luminescence band expressed in terms of quanta per unitphoton-energy interval can be fitted by two Gaussian components.
