Abstract
Landau levels and cyclotron resonance of holes in InSb are studied for the magnetic field along the ⟨001⟩ direction on the basis of the effective mass theory. The effective Hamiltonian used for the envelope states is of the form (Remark: Graphics omitted.). Here (Remark: Graphics omitted.) is a 4×4 coupled Hamiltonian matrix about the center of the Brillouin zone (B. Z.) including the inversion asymmetry part (k-linear term) in the valence band, and k0 is one of the valence band extreum points which exist away from the center of B.Z. in the ⟨111⟩ direction. Equally spaced Landau levels are obtained from the Hamiltonian, when |K⁄(h2m)(eH⁄hc)1⁄2| is larger than about 2, where H is the magnetic field and K is Kane’s coefficient of the k-linear term. Bagguley et al.’s valence band parameters are used in the Hamiltonian. The recent cyclotron resonance measurement reported by Robinson is well explained with the equally spaced Landau levels.
