Young’s Modulus of ZrTe₅

Abstract

The Young’s modulus of the linear chain compound ZrTe₅ was measured by a vibrating reed technique. Near 140 K no anomaly was observed which would correspond to charge or spin density wave formation. A sharp decrease in modulus was observed at 84 K, suggesting the presence of a new structural phase transition.
