A model of photo-induced structure change is presented to understand, from a unified view point, mechanisms of photo-polymerization of diacetylene and diolefin crystals and photo-isomerization of polydiacetylene crystal, photochromism and photo-chemical hole burning. We can realize at the same time how a cluster of photo-excited molecules is stabilized and how the molecular excitation far from the cluster is attracted to the nearest neighbor of the cluster. This theory will also give us a guiding principle to look for and design new materials for optical memory.
