Drugs targeting the immune system have been widely exploited in the treatment ofinflammatory, allergic and autoimmune disorders during the second half of the20th century. The recent advances in immunopharmacological research madeavailable new classes of clinically relevant drugs, comprising protein kinaseinhibitors and biologics, such as monoclonal antibodies that selectivelymodulate the immune responses. ImmuPhar is the Immunopharmacology Section ofIUPHAR, providing a unique international expert-lead platform aiming to dissectand promote the growing understanding of immune system as well as to challengethe identification and validation of drug targets and lead candidates for thetreatment of many forms of debilitating immunological diseases. In thissymposium I will outline the current movement on immunopharmacology in Japan aswell as the activity of ImmuPhar, and discuss future perspectives in thistrend.
