Abstract

Micro-scale needle electrode devices promise these advantages of high spatial and temporal recording of neuronal activity in the brain tissue. However, the electrode should further be miniaturized, in terms of low invasiveness and stable recording. To realize the small electrode, we have proposed a silicon (Si) crystal growth technology, called vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth, to fabricate a microneedle-electrode with a diameter of less than 5 µm. The microneedle-electrode enables the recording of neuronal activities from the cortex of the mouse, demonstrating the acute and chronic recordings with high signal quality. We also proposed a wireless recording configuration with Bluetooth low-energy technology. Applications of the needle device include not only the cortex but also other tissues; we are also developing a microneedle-based electrode device for neural recording in the spinal cord of a mouse.
