Abstract

Endometriosis, a leading cause of infertility, primarily affects the ovaries. Hormone therapy, the primary pharmacological treatment, suppresses ovulation, limiting its suitability for fertility treatments. Surgical interventions may also cause ovarian damage. Therefore, there is a critical need for non-hormonal pharmacological treatments. However, the current treatment options remain mainly asymptomatic, like painkillers. To address this issue, we have undertaken research using murine models of endometriosis to explore non-hormonal therapies.

One of the primary murine models used to study endometriosis involves the creation of peritoneal lesions. This model is developed by transplanting minced uterine tissue from donor mice into the abdominal cavity of recipient mice. Additionally, we have developed an ovarian endometriosis model by transplanting donor uterine tissue into the ovarian bursal cavity. This model enables us to assess the impact of endometriosis and its treatment on ovarian function and fertility, particularly in individuals with ovarian endometriosis.

Using these mouse models, our research delved into various aspects of drug therapies and their effectiveness, with a focus on NLRP inflammasomes (Reprod Biol Endocrinol. 2022), bacterial infections (Sci Transl Med. 2023), and cellular senescence.

In this presentation, I will introduce and discuss our approach to investigating non-hormonal therapies using murine models of endometriosis.
