Abstract

Objective:

Aim of this research was to investigated the potential activity of osteoblast proliferation induced by 50% ethanolic extract of Arenga pinnata (endosperm) dan Vigna radiata (peel) to accelerate bone healing process after tooth extraction.

Methods:

Nine male white Wistar-type Rats were divided into three group, treated by 50% ethanolic extract of Arenga pinnata (A.pinnata) and Vigna radiata (V.radiata), also control. 100 mg/Kg bw once daily po was given 7 days. At day seventh, the dextra incicivus maxilla was extracted and the extract continued given for following 7 days. The rats were terminated at day fourteenth. Tooth socket being evaluated by using Micro-computed tomography to analyze bone density. Parameters were Bone Volume, Bone Volume Fraction, Trabecular Thickness, Trabecular Number, and Trabecular Separation .

Result:

The result showed A.pinnata group has the best Bone Volume effect followed by V.radiata. Both of them significantly different compared to control (sig<0.05). Bone Volume Fraction (new bone volume per total tooth socket volume) indicated that both A.pinnata group and V.radiata has better activity than control and statistically different. In Trabecular Thickness (the number will increase in good bone proliferation) parameter, A.pinnata and V.radiata also showed better activity compare to control and they were significantly different. Trabecular Number is also indicated the good proliferation and compared to control, both extract indicated significantly different. It can be concluded that both of them give a good effect in bone proliferation. In Trabecular_Separation (the smaller number, the better activity) parameter, A.pinnata and V.radiata showed better activity compare to control.

Conclusion:

It can be conscluded that 50 % ethanolic extract of A.pinnata (endosperm) dan V.radiata (peel) can accelerated bone healing process after rat tooth extraction. It is preliminary research but sufficient interest for further study such as dose and particle size optimization, isolation of active compound, and study about the mechanism of action for both extract and isolate.
