Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to clarify the patterns of ethnic identity and acculturation among the 3rd generation of returnee from China in Japan from the viewpoint of segmented assimilation theory. The results of the analysis, the three types of ethnic identity are found; Meritocracy, Hybrid, and Chinese Culture-Oriented. According to segmented assimilation theory, these types are affected by family structure, modes of incorporation, and ethnic community. In this paper it’s found that the modes of incorporation have a strong effect on acculturation and ethnic identity among the 3rd generation of returnee from China, especially the acceptance in Japanese school and its experience, acquisition of culturally tolerant peer group, and keeping a distance from the ethnic community.
