Abstract

Indirect thermal desorption is one of the soil remediation technologies for soils polluted by recalcitrant organic compounds through the evaporation/degradation process by indirect heating. In this research, three perfluorinated compounds(PFCs)-perfluorooctane sulfonate, perfluorooctanoic acid, and perfluorononanoic acid ―were added to the soil and prepared as simulated polluted soil samples by PFCs. Prepared soil samples were applied for the degradation/removal experiments of PFCs by indirect thermal desorption. Effective temperature conditions for indirect thermal desorption were clarified to remove added PFCs from the simulated soil samples. Also, the removal characteristics of PFCs were investigated by analyzing the original compounds and decomposition by-products in the gaseous phase. From the results, it was elucidated that PFCs could be removed by indirect thermal desorption above 400℃ and that PFCs were decomposed through the indirect thermal process as the original compounds were not detected in the gaseous phase.
