Abstract
Studies were made on cultivation characteristics and trichloroethylene (TCE) -degradation characteristics ofMethylmonassp. KSW III, which was methanotrophic bacterium isolated from TCE-contaminated site in Kimitsu City, Chiba, Japan, and its applicability to bioaugmentation. Studies on the TCE degradation activities of KSW III under each cultivation conditions revealed that the TCE degradation activity of KSW III was affected by the concentration of inorganic salts in the culture medium, and that the TCE degradation activity of KSW III was not affected even if the soil from the TCE-contaminated site were added. Moreover, the applic-ability effect on the bioaugmentation of KSW III was evaluated by the soil column test. This result showed that TCE degradation capacity of the soil column test was at the same level as that of a vial test. It was suggested that KSW III is applicable for bioaugmentation in the TCE-contaminated sites.
