Abstract
“Shake-machi, ”residential quarters for Shinto priests located in Kamigamo area, is hard-to-find at the present time nationwide, so that a great effort has been made to preserve the residential quarters. The local inhabitants in the Kamigamo area have not visit Shake, so that they do not sufficiently recognize the values of Shake and the Shake-machi. Upon considering the environmental preservation of the Shake-machi in future, it would be vital that the children in Kamigamo area become familiarized with Shake-machi and have pleasant memories on Shake-machi. In order to activate the local district, we have invited the schoolchildren and their parents to visit Shake. The participants can understand that Shake keeps a traditional water recycling system including suikomiido, wells that absorbed rainwater or polluted water at Shake, and yarimizu, a rill that leads into the garden at Shake on Myojin River. The participants can also understand that the water pollution on the Myojin River still remains even after processing drained water by the public drainage system. The visit to Shake was well received by the schoolchildren as well as their parents. We discussed on the necessity for founding environmental bank in the community and for building up the foundation for making Shake open to the public for the preservation of the Shake-machi in the future.
