Abstract

The method of machining using only water instead of the conventional machining fluid, which includes lubricating oil or extreme pressure additive, is proposed in order to avoid rust formation. In view of environmental safety, this scheme is considered to improve the disposal of waste and the work setting in the production field. Hence, the application of the method to the internal grinding system is experimentally investigated. The machining method prevents the ferrous work piece from rusting by supplying electrons to the work piece as cathode with the DC power supply in the machining process. The rust-prevention effect maintains the grinding process for more than one hour by the outer ring type electrode and the constant current control in the test. In addition, the grinding performance using the rust prevention method is compared with the regular grinding results. Utilizing water, the efficiency of machining is about 76% of the traditional water soluble grinding fluid. Moreover, the rust preventive system requires a small introduction fee and running cost enough to apply to other machining due to the simple structure. The method of oil-free machining is considered an environment-friendly practice in the production fields.
