Abstract
On the basis of the data presented at the 1st Symposium of Biological Rotating Disc held in Tokyo, the design method for the biological rotating disc operation was introduced and discussed.
BOD of the wastewater treated by this method was attempted to be simulated by a mathematical model, so that the removal rate of BOD per unit surface area of the biofilm on the disc is expressed by the first-order approximation with respect to BOD in liquid.
The exprimental results showed that the method was practically well useful and the apparent first-order rate constants obtained from the practical use were gave similar values for both domestic and industrial wastes. The concentration of ammonium-nitrogen in the effluent from the apparatus was also expressed as a sole function of BOD, This supports the model based on the nitrification i n the biological rotating system.
The power consumption for rotation of the disc was calcutated and compared with the experimental results.
