Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between characteristics of driver behaviour without a potential collision situation and collision avoidance behaviour with a potential collision situation. An experiment for turning to the right at an intersection was implemented by using a test vehicle called JARI-ARV. As for a potential collision situation, an oncoming straight car was presented when turning to the right at the intersection. Results showed that drivers who exhibited careful driving behaviour such as significant decreases in their own speeds had careful collision avoidance behaviour such that they passed through the intersection after the oncoming car. The opposite was also true. Therefore it can be said that there is a possibility that improving driving styles based on how to drive can contribute to decreases in traffic accidents.
