Abstract
In this paper, it was discussed theoretically about the function of a planetary gear inerter from the view point of the difference from ideal inerter. According to the formulation of function of a planetary gear inerter based on velocity diagram analysis, it is proved that a planetary gear inerter has the function of redistributing moment of inertia comparing with an ideal inerter. This function affects to the frequency characteristics of the torsional vibration system. As a result, a planetary gear inerter is feasible to expand the design flexibility of frequency characteristics of the torsional vibration system.
