Abstract
A purpose of this study is to measure the maturity or the internal quality of watermelon by a non-destructive method. The hitting experimental equipment is developed and the characteristics of vibration and sound of watermelon are measured. An experimental sample is suspended by a simple pendulum as not to disturb the vibration of sample by hitting. The experiments were done in this fashion.
In part 1 of this study, the wave forms of vibration and sound obtained by hitting on the side or the bottom of watermelon were recorded. The characteristics of vibration and sound and the fundamental physical properties of watermelon are recorded.
In part 2, the relationship between the values of physical properties and the results of sensory evaluation will be reported.
In part 3, the method judging the maturity or the internal quality of watermelon will be reported by some values of physical properties and the analyzed results of the data of vibration and sound.
