An easy nondestructive discrimination method for detecting internal quality of watermelon, especially maturity, was proposed. Damping coefficients of vibrational waves were obtained by considering the watermelon as a simple viscoelastic system of spring and damping, supporting a concentrated mass and correlated with observed sensed values. The relationship between damping coefficients and hitting power, stored temperature and stored time were investigated, and basic data were obtained for sorting, packing, handling and storing watermelons.
