The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of friction and impact on the hulling performance of impeller type husker. In this paper, the characteristics of a horizontal axis type impeller husker was analyzed and used as a basis to propose a vertical axis type impeller husker. Then, the prototype of a compact vertical axis type impeller husker was constructed. Five kinds of hulling hoop were made to analyze the effect of hulling hoop's shapes on hulling performance. The hulling capacities of the vertical and horizontal axis type impeller huskers were compared. Test result showed that the hulling ratio of vertical axis type was higher than horizontal axis type when the rate of intake into the impeller is high.
