Abstract
We developed a silicone hollow fiber oxygenator. The surface area available for gas transfer was 5M2 and the priming volume was 450ml. S. H. O. was tested in animal experiments. Experimental study showed satisfactory results. S. H. O. were used in 42 cases including 5 congenital, 21 ischemic and 16 valvular diseases. Mean perfusion time was 138min. PaO2 was maintained from 300 to 400mmHg with the control of oxygen concentration. PaCO2 was 32±7.4mmHg during perfusion. Plasma free hemoglobin was increased up to 24mg/dl/hr. In conclusion, S. H. O. was demonstrated to have excellent capacity for gas exchang with minimal hemolysis in 42 cases undergoing open heart surgery.
