Abstract
Between 1974 and July 1983, two hundred-forty patients underwent cardiac valve replacement using mechanical valve for aortic position and bioprosthesis for mitral position in this institution. The clinical results of cardiac valve replacement, namely survival rate, thromboembolism, hemorrhage, infection, valve failure, hemolysis, re-replacement and hemodynamics were analyzed in both mechanical and biological valve groups. The satisfactory clinical results were obtained in both groups. The present data suggest that the selection of the cardiac valve prosthesis should be based on the patient's age, sex, the site of valve lesion, social and geographical conditions.
