Abstract
Autologous tissue is one of the best material for artificial organs. In vascular prostheses, however we should wait for more than three weeks to get a method to make suitable autologous tissue tube like the Sparkes Mandril graft. To overcome this problem, we developed a new method to make an autologous tissue tube during operation by enmeshing minced omentum tissue fragments into a highly porous vascular prosthesis wall. An animal study showed no bleeding through the graft wall during and after implantation. The center area of the luminal surface of the graft explanted at 6 weeks was lined with endothelial-like cells. The neoadventitia and the interstices of the fabric was occupied with numerous fibroblasts with many capillary blood vessels. While in the control grafts, one out of six animals died due to the bleeding within 24 hours after surgery, and another animal died by graft infection. One graft occluded with fresh thrombus. Three grafts were found to be patent, however, endothelialization was limited near anastomotic sites, and no endothelialization in the center area. These results indicated that the newly developed method can accelerate the healing process of the neointima of fabric vascular prostheses by the special healing ability induced by the miced omentum tissue.
