Abstract
Mechanism of solute transport through the membrane by diffusion accompanied with adsorption is important to prepare the suitable dialysis membrane for removal of low molecular weight protein. We measured time course of removed amount of cytochrome C using small dialyzers of original design composed of polyacrylomtrile (PAN-CX2, DX) and polysulfone (PS-UW) membranes to determine accumulated amount by adsorption from total removed amount and removed amount by diffusion. Removal rate of cytochrome C of the PAN membrane was larger than that of the PS membrane at the beginning of the experiment because the PAN membrane adsorbed larger amount of cytochrome C at equilibrium than the PS membrane and then reached almost the same value, and the total removed amount at the beginning was the removed amount by adsorption. In conclusion, efficiency of removal of protein with dialysis membrane depends on both equilibrium amount and rate of adsorption.
