Abstract

We evaluated the effects of continuous hemodiafiltration (CHDF) on IL-6 and granulocyte elastase elimination. Ten multiple organ failure patients treated with CHDF were investigated in this study (Six patients for polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) membrane, Four for polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane). Concentration of IL-6 and granulocyte elastase were measured at before and after filter, and in ultradiafiltrate. % change of concentration between before and after filter, and clearance were calculated. There was no differences in % changes in IL-6 concentration between PAN and PMMA. Clearance of IL-6 was 18.0±14.5ml/min in PAN and 12.2±8.7ml/min in PMMA. Granulocyte elastase concentration was increased significantly from 606.0±641.3pg/ml to 2038.6±2556.8pg/min in PAN. However, there was no significant change in PMMA. IL-6 was eliminated through CHDF filters. PAN membrane increased granulocyte elastase concentration than PMMA.
